Dress "Code" & Tips

Fantasy / Renaissance Fair Costumes!

Instead of doing modern formal of any sort, we're asking our guests to put together a costume. They don't need to be fancy or expensive, but feel free to use this event as an excuse for setting up a nice Renaissance fair outfit. Did we mention there will be a costume contest (one for kids, another for adults)?

Dress as if your Dungeons and Dragons character, OC adventurer, knight, wizard, squire, ren fair character, or even favorite fantasy game / book character were attending a wedding. Fantasy is a pretty broad term here, and distinctly non-fantastical historical costumes in the typical renaissance fair tradition are acceptable. Steampunk is also perfectly fine. Really, don't overthink it.

Here are some general costume guidelines:

  • General Theme: An Adventuresome Wedding
  • Primary Colors: Crimson Red, Royal Purple
  • Secondary Colors: Silver, Black, Gold
  • On Wearing White: White is fine, not a protected color, but please don't wear a wedding dress.
  • Arms and Armaments: If you do bring a fantastical weapon for your outfit, it must be safe and secure at all times. Children will be present. "Peace bindings" (in costume terminology) are required.
  • If you can't (or won't) wear a costume: Please wear "nice / dressy" clothes, using our colors if possible.

Shopping Tips!

As a reminder, we aren't asking folks to spend a bunch of money or go out of their way to get a fancy costume. But if dressing up sounds fun, here are some tips for getting a cool outfit!

Halloween Stores will probably offer something simple, and should be open by the time our wedding kicks off!

Thrift Stores offer a great option for finding interesting pieces at cheap prices. You can't guarantee they will have something that fits the theme, but they often do.

Theatre and Costume Shops are a great place to find exactly the kind of clothes that fit this event, and they often have inexpensive rentals available.

Crafts Stores can be the perfect way for a crafts-inclined person to come up with an outfit. The modern cosplay community has lots of videos and guides available online, in written format and videos on YouTube, for building your own outfits from scratch.
